Empty Nest Design

There comes a time in every ones life where the kids are gone and you are left surveying whats left of your home. You have now become an official "empty nester". Empty nest design is a whole other area of design , because you now have extra room/rooms and can change your directions in how they are used.Ask yourself questions, do you want a work out room, library, an intimate party room? How about a room for your specific hobby, or new master bedroom and bath? Do you have grandchildren that visit often and we need specific guidelines so you can baby proof in minutes.I also find that very often the furniture, accessories, paint, window treatments are in need of updating. Many couples want to downsize to a smaller home. If this describes you, then there are some steps to take to make sure you do the right thing. First and foremost, hire a professional interior designer. They will be able to assess what direction for you to take . You may have lots of heirlooms and collections that you either want to keep , pass on to other loved ones, or sell. Your old furniture may be recovered if it is good quality. You may want to throw it all out and start over with a totally new style. These are important decisions and should not be made in a hurry. I like to sit with the client/clients and find out about their lifestyle, hobbies, pets, and get a sense of who they are. Many people want to change from formal furniture to more comfortable and casual. They want low maintenance fabrics and furniture. All of these things are important when you design for the empty nest.
