A Room Makeover, How Anne Does It
I really love doing room makeovers. As a designer, I love going into a tired looking family room or living room and giving it a new look.Since I have no emotional attachment to anything in the room, I can objectively get rid of things, or move them to other rooms without any problem. I usually start by surveying the room and getting a feel for it. Then, I decide what pieces are worth keeping. I check out attics, basements and other rooms for furniture and accessories that can be used. Usually, I find furniture that is not being used or accessories, lamps, tables that are overlooked or packed away. People have treasure troves packed away in their homes and don't know it! I bring them all together and then begin the process of deciding what will work and what won't. Placement is most important to this process. If you don't have a clue, you could end up with the same thing. Try putting the sofa, chairs and tables in different groupings. I usually know this immediately, but to the beginner it can be hard. If you get a grouping that you like, leave it for a couple of days. You may hate it the next day and need to tweak it. For more of a long term redo, tired old paintings and prints can get a new look by re framing and matting. New shades on lamps, a fresh coat of paint on an ugly end table can make all the difference in the world. Get Creative. And have fun.
